6 Tips for Space Saving on Your Narrowboat

If you own a narrowboat, you probably know that space isn’t totally abundant, and you’re constantly thinking of ingenious storage solutions to help you utilise every inch of the room. Luckily, there are lots of ways you can free up space on your narrowboat. Here are 5 tips for space saving…

1. Floor to ceiling shelves

We all know how important shelves are when it comes to storage. Find an area(s) on your narrowboat where you can install a floor to ceiling shelf. Here you can store glasses, condiments, books or all of your bathroom goods.

2. Raise the bed

How much wasted space do you have beneath your bed? If you raised the framework of the bed, it would create enough space to house large boxes or plastic storage boxes. This could be used for shoes, clothes, towels, coats, spare blankets - anything at all.

Not only is decluttering very therapeutic, but it’s also a super easy way of creating more space. Narrowboats aren’t designed for hoarders so get rid of anything that you don’t currently, or won’t, use.

4. Vacuum pack storage bags

Vacuum pack bags will reduce the amount of space needs to put away clothing and soft furnishings. The bags are made of clear plastic, making it easy to see what’s inside.

5. Hooks

Hooks in the ceiling are brilliant in the galley, mainly for cups, mugs and saucepans. You could also make your own wine glasses rack along the ceiling - as long as you ensure it’s sturdy enough and the glasses won’t knock together and smash!

6. Roof boxes

You can make a roof box yourself or have one made by a bespoke service. This is a large shallow timber box designed to be kept on the roof and it’s perfect for storing anything that you don’t mind keeping outside and will be neatly covered with a fitted tarpaulin. If it’s designed for your boat it can also be cute to accommodate the curve of your roof.
