Summer means the arrival of longer, warmer days spent on board so you need to ensure you’ve prepped your boat accordingly for smooth and safe sailing all summer long.

Of course, every boat will have its own unique requirements but if you follow these general steps then you’ll find yourself saving time and money when it comes to making sure your boat is in prime condition for summer boating.

Please note: if you’ve any doubt at all about a particular area of your boat, consult a professional.

Boat and Trailer Inspections

Check your boat and trailer for the season. To avoid penalties, take care of legal requirements first, you don’t want to miss out on the summer due to not having the right paperwork. Your registration, license and decal for the boat should all be up to date.

Once you’ve checked over the necessary paperwork, inspect the hull and all other parts of the boat for damage that may have occurred since the last time you used it.

Some important things to check:

  • Water pump and thermostats
  • Fluids
  • Filters
  • Battery
  • Inspect zins
  • Bilge pump
  • Manifolds and risers
  • Bellows

After confirming that the boat is in good condition, you’ll want to ensure all the safety equipment onboard is in tact. Thoroughly inspect all lifejackets for holes or tears and check fire extinguishers are full and in good working condition. You should also check your boat’s visual distress signals, navigation lights, and bell/whistle.

How you get your boat to the water is just as important as making sure it works. You ought to check the trailer you’re using to transport the boat, as well as the tires to make sure everything is safe and in working condition.

Another piece of vital boating equipment is the anchor. To be on the safe side, your anchor should weigh 1 pound for every foot in length of the boat. Ensure that the anchor is tightly secured to the boat with a rope that will not sink and is just as long as the boat.

First aid kit

It’s always a good idea to have a first aid kit wherever you go, especially on a boat. It could take some time to return to shore and get medical attention if an emergency situation occurs.

With all the necessary prep out of the way, you can take to the water with your loved ones with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you have what you need to take care of any unforeseen circumstances!
