Isles of Scilly: Weekend Guide

Written by GJW Direct | 01-May-2018 13:56:25

The Isles of Scilly are one of Southern England’s best kept secrets and if you’re a boat owner you have exclusive access to some of the most stunning spots that are hard to reach by land.

These beautiful, secluded isles are the perfect getaway for any family, with unspoilt sandy beaches enough to give you that piece of paradise that we’re all searching for.

The Scilly Isles are located just off Cornwall’s coast, with no traffic, no large supermarkets and no big hotel chains. The only sounds you’ll hear are the crashing waves and background chatter between the gulls soaring above.

To give you a bit of guidance on your travels around the Isles of Scilly, we’ve picked out some of our favourite restaurants, walks and beaches...

Restaurants

Dibble & Grub, St Mary’s

Breathtaking views stretching as far as the eye can see, a glass of bubbly in hand and a lush platter of the finest cuisine to devour, does it get much better than that? The answer is a definite no, making the Dibble and Grub restaurant a must for anyone who visits St Mary’s Island. Set on the edge of the picturesque Porthcressa Beach, dine on everything from eggs benedict and pancakes to paninis and tapas.

Ruin Beach Cafe, Tresco

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, brunch, afternoon tea, whatever meal you’re looking for, the Ruin Beach Cafe will cater for you and your family. Sit in the main restaurant or find a spot on the veranda, where you can munch with a peaceful sea-view. The rustic wood-fired oven is fuelled with island logs to add a taste of the Med to every dish, from fresh fish to juicy beef.

Scenic walks

Scilly Walks

For those who enjoy an educational experience, Scilly Walks is a guided tour around the hotspots of the Scilly Isles. You’ll delve into the rich history of the isle whilst stumbling upon 8000 years of archeology.

Embark on an adventure

Alternatively, you can explore the Isles yourself, follow a map or even your nose as you embark on your very own adventure. Amble across the natural beauty of the coastal paths and take in the diverse wildlife of the landscape. The stunning scenery makes for the perfect family photo!

Best Beaches

Appletree Bay, Tresco

The crystal clear waters, the pristine white sand, the tranquility of the ocean waves, what better way to escape the real world? Appletree Bay has more shelter than its neighbouring beaches which is why it is often warmer than other seaside bays.

Green Bay, Bryher

If the name doesn’t give it away, Green Bay is protected by a barrier of lush greenery, encouraging a tropical-like vibe, which transports you to an idyllic hideaway that’ll make you feel like you’re a million miles away.

Fun Family Activities

Sea Quest Glass Bottom Boat, St Mary’s

Board this 12 seater glass bottom boat and watch the marine wildlife go about their daily lives. Keep an eye out for seals, puffins and dolphins!

Scilly Seal Snorkelling, St Martin’s

For a real exotic experience, try snorkelling with the seals! This underwater adventure is great fun for families. Get up close like never before and watch the beautiful aquatic creatures swim around your flippers.

It doesn’t get much better than beginning a new sailing adventure but be sure you have taken all the necessary safety precautions first, it’s best to be onboard than overboard! For expert advice and top safety tips, visit here.
