Is your Instagram feed full of enviable travel photos? Lean, bronzed, smiley travellers hiking up mountains or abseiling down waterfalls… *Sigh* if only that were us!

Well, it can be! If you enjoy getting outdoors and near the open water, here are five of the most Instagrammable lakes in Europe…

Lake Garda, Italy

Enclosed by the jagged mountains in Northern Italy, Lake Garda makes for an impressive setting. A number of resorts surround the lake, including Garda town, which is located on the South-Eastern shore. Lake Garda is ideal for those who want a smooth sail, the calm waters and the warm climate produce the perfect relaxed day on the water.

Sognefjord, Norway

As you adventure through on your kayak, this Norwegian lake offers magnificent views of the towering glaciers. Running waterfalls stream down the mountain sides as you glide over the aquamarine lagoon. If you’re lucky, you might even spot porpoises swimming beneath you, it really is an unforgettable experience.

Sete Cidades, The Azores, Portugal

Sete Cidades is isolated by the green crater slopes of one of Sao Miguel’s dormant volcanoes. Paddle your kayak around the lake which boasts ripples of blue and green. The serenity and peace which comes with kayaking upon Sete Cidades is perfect for those looking for an escape.

Lake Annecy, France

Lake Annecy, also known as Europe’s cleanest lake, is 9 miles long and 2 miles wide and sits at the bottom of the French Alps. After spending the day exploring on your kayak, reward yourself with some of the delicious local cuisine in the lakeside village.

Lake Saimaa, Finland

Step out of the city, away from all of the hustle and bustle, grab your canoe and explore the beauty of Lake Saimaa. Skim over the subtle ripples of the water and discover the wildlife which live in the surrounding woodland.
