From competitive yacht racing to fun and family-friendly sailing regattas, here are some of the key sailing events and races to add to your calendar over the coming months and into next year…

 

February 2020

RYA Dinghy Show - 29th February -1st March

The RYA Dinghy Show heralds the start of the dinghy sailing season in the UK and is a must for any keen sailor. The exhibitors range from clubs to classes, dinghy builders, clothing brands, all complemented by interactive talks and demonstrations throughout both days.

 

May 2020

Round the Island Race, Isle of Wight - 30th May

This one day race round the Isle of Wight attracts over 1,400 boats and around 15,000 sailors, making it one of the most popular yacht races in the world. Competitors travel from all over the UK, Europe and parts of the USA to race the 50 nautical mile course around the Isle. The Round the Island Race is a great opportunity to see some of the world’s most renowned sailors compete against families and beginners.

 

July 2020

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Sailing - 27th July - 6th August

Obviously this event may be a little out of the way for some to physically travel to, but it's still worth putting in your diary to keep an eye on the sailing events taking place. Sailing is a longstanding sport at the Olympic games, appearing every year since 1904, featuring a variety of sailing disciplines including traditional dinghies, such as the Laser, 470 and Finn, windsurfing, twin-trapeze skiffs for men and women and now foiling catamarans.

 

August 2020

Cowes Week - 8th - 15th August

Cowes Week is the UK's biggest regatta that takes place every year and it's one of the longest running in the world. With seven days of high-calibre competition and over 40 races taking place daily, you'll get the chance to take your sailing passion to a new level.    

Abersoch Regatta Week

The first couple of weeks in August will see the 134th Abersoch Regatta Week. This is a great week for all the family. The Regatta donates all funds raised to the local RNLI, Air Ambulance, local schools and the local surf club. There will be a mix of events to take part in, including a golf competition, best dressed beach hut competition and a raft race.

Dartmouth Royal Regatta - 27th - 29th August

Thousands of visitors descend on Dartmouth every year for the Royal Regatta. This event is held over three days, packed with brilliant entertainment and fantastic competition, including air sailing, sports, live music, fireworks, street food and much more.

 

September 2020

Southport 24 Hour Race - 19th - 20th September

The Southport 24 Hour Race is a national endurance race for sailing dinghies organised by the West Lancashire Yacht Club. It’s an opportunity for all dinghy sailors to compete for serious trophies, network with other sailing enthusiasts and enjoy the excellent hospitality provided.

Southampton Sailing Week

Southampton Sailing Week sees some 600 sailors and 60 yachts compete for 6 competitive cups. Races are held across three days, previous cups have included the City Cup, the Women’s Cup and the Property Cup. Each day of the regatta starts with breakfast and finishes with drinks and refreshments at the 5* Harbour Hotel.

 

October 2020

British Marine Industry Regatta 

Each year the British Marine Regatta sets sail for an exclusive event on the Solent. It's the perfect opportunity to network with other marine professionals, while helping raise money for charity.
